Make This the Summer You Learn Something New: Adult Creative Workshops in Plymouth

Summer in Plymouth has a way of making us want to do more. The lighter evenings encourage us to leave the house, the waterfront feels especially inviting and even an ordinary weekday can feel as though it has a little more possibility.

That makes it a wonderful time to learn something new.

You might finally try crochet, discover that you love printmaking, join a choir, pick up a paintbrush, take your first blacksmithing lesson or simply find a friendly group where you can read, walk or make something in the company of other people.

Learning as an adult does not have to involve a qualification, a lengthy course or being particularly good at anything. It can simply mean allowing yourself to be a beginner and giving your brain something different to think about.

There are wellbeing benefits too. The NHS includes learning new skills, connecting with other people and being physically active among its recommended steps for supporting mental wellbeing. Creative and community activities can give us a sense of purpose, build confidence and provide regular opportunities to spend time with others.

NHS five steps to mental wellbeing:

Here are some of the adult creative workshops, community groups and gentle social activities taking place across Plymouth during summer 2026.

Prices, availability and schedules can change, particularly for community-led activities, so always check directly with the organiser before travelling.

Thursday 30 July: Make and Immerse – Gelli Plate Printing

Devonport Guildhall and Market Hall | From 9am

Combine hands-on printmaking with an immersive cinema experience during this unusual creative morning from Real Ideas.

Gelli plate printing is a wonderfully accessible form of monoprinting in which paint is layered onto a reusable printing plate before textures, stencils and found objects are added. The result is then transferred onto paper to create a completely individual print.

Because the process is experimental, it is ideal for beginners who would like to make art without worrying about drawing accurately or following complicated rules.

The workshop is followed by an immersive screening of Cell! Cell! Cell! at Market Hall.

Find the workshop through the Devonport Guildhall programme:

https://www.realideas.org/guildhall

Friday 31 July and selected Fridays throughout summer: Life Drawing with Ralph Nel

The Box | 12.30pm–2.30pm | Adults only

Learn to observe the human form more closely during these welcoming life-drawing sessions with Plymouth artist and tutor Ralph Nel.

The classes are suitable for beginners as well as people who already draw. Each session includes practical guidance, warm-up exercises and the opportunity to develop your own approach.

Materials are provided, although regular artists are welcome to bring their preferred drawing equipment. Further summer sessions are scheduled for 14, 21 and 28 August, followed by additional dates in September.

Saturday 1 August: August Drawing Club – Drawing a Head

Devonport Guildhall | 10am

Faces can be among the most intimidating subjects to draw, but this session encourages participants to forget about creating a perfect portrait and instead explore the physical structure of the head.

The workshop looks at contours, surfaces, softer areas and the underlying structure of the face through observation and experimental mark-making.

Drawing Club is intended to connect local artists and curious beginners, so you do not need to arrive with a polished portfolio or years of experience.

https://www.realideas.org/guildhall

Saturday 1 August: Cyanotype Workshop

Devonport Guildhall | 10am | Adults

Use the summer light as part of the artistic process during this introduction to cyanotype printing.

Cyanotype is a historic photographic technique known for its beautiful deep-blue finish. Participants arrange plants, objects and other materials onto specially prepared paper before exposing them to light and developing the final image.

You will learn how the technique works, experiment with composition and take home your own collection of prints.

Sunday 2 August: Lino Club

Devonport Guildhall | 10am–12pm

Lino Club provides dedicated studio time for anyone who already understands the basics of lino printing and would like to work on their own designs alongside other printmakers.

Tutor Jess Van Baalen is available to offer advice, answer questions and help with technical difficulties. Participants can also use the Guildhall’s printing presses, tools and inks.

This is not a structured beginners’ workshop, so complete newcomers may prefer to attend one of the introductory lino sessions later in the summer.

Tuesday 4 August: Stitches Beginner Workshop

Stitch & Splodge, 32 Devonport Road, Stoke

Its beginner sessions are designed to help adults develop practical textile and stitching skills in an informal environment. The programme changes regularly and includes crochet, knitting, slow stitching, Indian block printing and other accessible crafts.

The studio is particularly good for anyone who would like some patient, face-to-face guidance rather than repeatedly pausing an online tutorial at home.

Thursday 6 August: Make and Immerse – Drypoint Printing

Devonport Guildhall and Market Hall | From 9am

Drypoint is a printmaking process in which an image is scratched directly into a plate. Ink settles into the lines before the design is transferred onto paper, producing prints with rich, expressive marks.

This Real Ideas workshop combines a practical introduction to drypoint with an immersive screening of CAPCOM GO! at Market Hall.

It should appeal to adults who enjoy learning through doing and would like to pair a morning of creativity with one of Plymouth’s most unusual digital experiences.

The August session looks at simplifying the body into basic shapes and using negative space to improve proportion and accuracy. Participants can attend one class or follow the monthly series as it continues through the autumn.

Materials are provided and the course is suitable for people who want to build confidence rather than simply sit down and hope their drawing works.

Theatre Royal Plymouth

Theatre Royal Plymouth’s FUSE programme offers training and development for artists, performers and people building a creative practice.

The Move session focuses on physicality, movement and performance. It is primarily aimed at artists in training and established professional artists from Plymouth and the wider South West, rather than complete beginners looking for a recreational dance class.

The process of cutting, choosing and layering can also be calm and absorbing, providing a welcome break from everyday pressures.

Devonport Guildhall | 10am

Musicians provide a lively and unusual drawing subject, bringing together movement, posture, instruments and performance.

This session offers the chance to think about how quick marks can capture gesture and energy rather than trying to create a completely static portrait.

It is also a good reason to open that neglected sketchbook and draw in the company of other people.

Take your learning into the water

Wild swimming around Plymouth Sound

Plymouth has a growing open-water swimming community, with popular locations including Firestone Bay, Tinside’s sea steps and designated areas around the National Marine Park.

New swimmers should not enter unfamiliar open water alone. Learn about tides, currents, water temperature and shipping activity, and begin with an experienced group or qualified instructor.

Give yourself permission to be a beginner

Adults can become very good at deciding that something is not for them before they have tried it.

We tell ourselves that we cannot draw, that we are not musical, that everyone else in the class will already know what they are doing or that we are too old to learn.

But your first lino print is allowed to be uneven. Your crochet square is allowed to curl at the edges. Your portrait is allowed to look nothing like the model, and your first attempt at singing in harmony is allowed to go slightly astray.

The point is not to become an expert in a single afternoon.

The point is to leave the house, meet someone new, use a different part of your brain and experience the satisfaction of doing something simply because you were curious.

Whether you choose blacksmithing, book club, painting, crochet, singing, tai chi or a gentle walk beside the sea, Plymouth has plenty of ways to make this a summer in which you do more than watch the weeks go by.

Choose something that interests you, check the details, book your place and have a go.
