World Theatre Day shines a spotlight on the vital role theatre plays in Plymouth

Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP) is marking World Theatre Day by highlighting the significant contribution of theatre to the identity and economy of Plymouth.

As the largest regional producing theatre in the UK, TRP brings world‑class productions to the South West, supports local artists, nurtures creativity in young people and those who face disadvantages, as well as generating millions for the local economy. On Friday 27th March, TRP is using World Theatre Day to celebrate and reaffirm that impact.

Last year, the arrival of cultural phenomenon Hamilton was a landmark moment for Plymouth, attracting 60,000 audience members from across the globe and bringing a significant income into the city. In total across the financial year 2024/2025, TRP delivered an estimated £53.3 million economic impact in the city and the wider South West region, up from £45.9m the previous year and marking the most successful period in the theatre’s history.

This summer, the West End hit Moulin Rouge! The Musical will continue that momentum, playing 38 performances across a month-long run and once again bringing investment, thousands of visitors and national attention to the city.

At the same time, TRP is strengthening Plymouth’s position as a creative hub by producing more work of its own. This summer’s TRP production of FAME The Musical will follow the recent co-production successes of The Artist and The Devil Wears Prada, demonstrating the theatre’s growing ability not just to present world‑class work, but to create it.

In conjunction with World Theatre Day, TRP has released a short trailer offering a glimpse behind the scenes and showcasing the people that bring the theatre to life.

TRP’s Chief Executive and Artistic Director James Mackenzie-Blackman, said: “Last year was a momentous year for TRP as we celebrated the most financially successful period in our history.

“World Theatre Day is a powerful reminder that theatre is more than entertainment; it’s a source of pride and connection and really makes a difference to both people and the economy.”
