When The Light Breaks In

  • Plymouth Arts Cinema Tavistock Place Plymouth, England, PL4 8AT United Kingdom (map)

Dir. Rúnar Rúnarsson, 2025, Iceland, 80 mins. In Icelandic with English subtitles. Cast. Elín Hall, Mikael Kaaber, Katla Njálsdóttir.

A group of young art students wrestle with friendship, grief and secrecy against the breathtaking Icelandic scenery, in this stylish Nordic drama.

Against the warm glow of sunset, art students Una and Diddi plan their future, now Diddi plans to break up with his girlfriend at home. But by the next sunset, Una’s life is upturned as tragedy strikes. With their relationship now forever remaining a secret, Una is forced to deal with her intense grief internally when Diddi’s girlfriend arrives, grappling with her need to grieve openly and shattering someone else’s life.

With an award-winning lead performance from Elín Hall and striking 16mm cinematography, Rúnarsson’s fourth feature (after Volcano, Sparrow, and Echo) is a stunning look at grief and young love.
