Pawel Pawłikowski’s Oscar-winning film is a stunning monochrome drama about a young trainee nun investigating her family’s past in 1960s Poland.
On the eve of taking her vows, novice nun Anna is ordered by the Mother Superior to explore her family history before submitting to the church. Her only living relative seems to be the free-living, hard-drinking Wanda. The unlikely pair embark on a journey to lift the shroud from their family’s dark past and confront a devastating truth.
The film is a reflection on Poland’s own recent history. With its stunning black and white photography and cropped Academy ration imagery, Ida is an extraordinary, beautifully paced and melancholy film.
★★★★★ “Feels more like a restored and rediscovered classic than a new movie”
