Hail Bright Cecilia! South West Chamber Choir

  • Stoke Damerel Church 85 Paradise Road Plymouth, England, PL1 5QL United Kingdom (map)

Plymouth South West Chamber Choir is collaborating with Marjon University to work with students and bring more young people from the Uni into the choir.

The repertoire is challenging by choice and Musical Director Mark Bennett is keen to raise the standards higher still and stretch the skills.

Musical Director Mark Bennett also teaches children and adults of all ages. “This collaboration is key to bringing younger people into choral singing. It’s a myth that certain types of music are unapproachable. They’re no our younger singers appreciate that and get the chance to perform in public. Music should be a vital supportive part of everyone’s lives. Popular TV series like ”The Choir” have shown that singing can really bring people together as a team, support wellbeing and break down barriers.”

Former BBC Spotlight presenter Christopher Slade has been in the choir for a number of years. “Singing is a great thing. Trying to improve my skills is a joy.

The choir is very welcoming and mistakes are a part of it! Singing in a group is a fantastic communal experience. What a sound, what a feeling!”

Charlotte Goodall is a student at Marjon. “I had some singing experience before, but joining this choir has really let me expand my experience and work alongside people of all ages and all backgrounds. We are singing simply beautiful music.”

All these contributors are available to interview.

The choir rehearses each Wednesday evening at Marjon and students from there are welcome.

Other potential applicants should note there is a waiting list.

The Choir’s next concert is on November 22nd at 3pm at Stoke Damerel Church, Plymouth. It will feature works by Britten, Purcell and others – the theme “Hail Bright Cecilia!” – celebrating the Patron Saint of Music.

The Choir will be supported by the Greenwood Consort.
