David Gray's Retrospective

  • Manor Street Galleries 14-17 Manor Street Plymouth, England, PL1 1TL United Kingdom (map)

Fifty Years of Painting marks a remarkable journey through five decades of artistic life. From the quiet lyricism of his early landscapes to the freer, more intuitive works of recent years, David’s paintings trace a deep engagement with place, memory, and time.

Born in Dublin and now based in Plymouth, David's work is shaped by his travels across the world, whilst in the Royal Navy — from North America to the Middle East and the Falklands — his vision has been continually broadened by experience. The light, weather, and atmosphere of these journeys echo through his work, infusing it with a sense of movement and reflection.

Music, too, is ever-present: the voices of Tom Waits, Laurie Anderson, and Leonard Cohen drifting through the studio as rhythm and tone find their way into paint. Across fifty years, David’s practice has remained grounded in curiosity — an ongoing search for meaning and connection through colour, gesture, and the quiet persistence of looking.

Join us in this celebration of an artist with many stories to tell, so you can meet him and not just see, but hear some of those stories.
